My name is Rick Morgan. When my wife Blair and I got married, we chose Epworth as our church because she had grown up at Epworth and her parents are members. We got involved early on; I assisted the youth group and Blair taught Sunday School. When we got married, Blair had a son from a previous marriage and I had a daughter from my previous marriage. We had two children together at that time and as they got to be Sunday School age, Epworth’s Sunday School attendance had gotten so small that we decided to search for another church that had more children. We found another church and when our youngest entered college we felt called to return to Epworth. Since being back for about 3 years, I have really enjoyed the Methodist Men’s group that meets on Wednesday night once a month and playing in the praise band at the 9 a.m. service.
At my prior church, I got involved in a men’s bible study on Thursday mornings which changed my life. We studied the Bible and how it affects our lives and we held each other accountable for living out our faith. My relationship with Christ has really grown through this Thursday morning bible study but I noticed there was not a morning group for men at Epworth. After consulting with Sangwoo, I decided to take his recommendation and start a men’s group with the structure of the Methodist Class Meeting format. We get together and talk about how God is working in our lives and explore all kinds of topics and how the Bible and Christ speak to those topics. We have done several books of the Bible and have covered subjects such as homosexuality, why trust the Bible, and what it means to love your neighbor as Jesus would have us love.
It is a wonderful group of men seeking out their relationship with Christ through fellowship and prayer with a strong foundation in God’s word. Leading this group is one of my life’s greatest satisfaction and I am so grateful that God has given me this opportunity to serve Him in this way. I know it is the Holy Spirit that is speaking through me to hopefully direct each man towards a closer relationship with Christ. I serve because Christ told us to serve Him and serving His church is a way for me to show my appreciation for what He did for me on the cross.
Each and every one of us has what the Bible refers to as gifts of the spirit and we should all identify them and use them to serve His kingdom. God loves a cheerful giver whether it be your money, your time, or your talents or all three. I get much personal joy serving and helping others. I serve him because of the way he loved me and paid the penalty for my sin so I can have a close personal relationship with him. Any man is welcome in our group who earnestly wants to seek Christ, as we all work through the sins in our lives to become more like Christ, I have a long way to go and I hope you will join me on that journey. Please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to join our group. We meet almost every Tuesday morning at the church at 6:45 a.m.
