Nursery Assistant
Purpose
To provide, promote, and ensure safe and nurturing childcare for Epworth UMC members and visitors
Reporting Structure
Reports to Nursery Coordinator and Coordinator of Children’s Ministries, who is responsible to Pastor of Spiritual Formation, Senior Pastor, and SPPRC
Job Requirements
- Demonstrate love and integrity
- General knowledge of child development
- Physical and emotional health sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position
- Be accountable and dedicated to working in a team environment alongside the pastors, staff, and volunteers
- At least 18 years old
Educational Requirements
High school diploma or GED is preferred
Professional Requirements
- Experience working with children under the age of 8
- Certification in Safe Sanctuary
- Training in children’s first aid and children’s CPR is preferred
Physical Requirements
Ability to work in a range of conditions that are moderately physically demanding, including but not limited to: prolonged periods of standing, sitting, and walking; the need to pick up small children and/or move furniture, boxes, and the like up to 40 pounds; and the need to adapt to both indoor and outdoor (playground) settings
Responsibilities of Employment
- Encourage and lead activities appropriate for young children during Nursery hours, including Christian spiritual formation activities, as directed by Nursery Coordinator
- Demonstrate the joy of being with children
- Engage the families/caregivers of young children attending the Nursery, and maintain effective registration and communication systems with them
- Provide childcare during weekly Sunday morning worship services and Sunday school, and during occasional afternoon/evening worship services and events
- Provide basic childcare duties for each child, including: maintaining a clean and healthy environment, checking and changing diapers, escorting potty-trained children to bathroom, and promoting a peaceful social environment
- Follow and enforce all Nursery policies in accordance with Safe Sanctuary
- Bring any issue that requires more discipline than non-threatening verbal reminders to the attention of the child’s responsible adult(s), knowing that children may not be disciplined by physical means
- Consistently practice confidentiality by sharing concerns about children or families/caregivers only with that family and supervisors

Employee Status and Compensation
Non-exempt, part-time, hourly wage position up to 5 hours per week, as determined by SPPRC and Senior Pastor, approved by Church Council
Evaluation
After 90-day probationary period
Then annually, as determined by the Senior Pastor and SPPRC
